“Step right up, step right up, be witness to the greatest show in the land! That’s right folks, we’re gonna have us a free show, right here right now I say. Gather ‘round and see whats going down folks, its all free and its starting right here right now. This is the one you’ve read about, you’ve heard your neighbors talking about it, and its all starting right here right now. We’re gonna bring out the fire eater, the snake girl, the beardless dwarfs of Yestovia. Come see the fat lady, the sword jugglers, the fishmen of the deep. Perhaps you’d like to try your luck at games of skill, try your hand at catching the greased goose, we can’t have that foul fowl running loose, one will get ya two, two will get ya five. What’ll it be my beautiful lass, the cow-man, the midget acrobats, or perhaps you seek answers to the mysteries of the planes? Then step right through here, and have a visit with the all seeing, all knowing Belgarde the Magnificent. But be forewarned my dear lass, the knowledge of the future can come at a terrible price.”

“Ah mademoiselle, whats brings such beauty to mon salon? A glimpse into ze future perhaps, a telling of fortunes, a view of ones true amour? (A thought enters your mind: “What iz dis mysterious man’s tale?”). Ah, I know now, Belgarde knows, he iz flattered zat you would be curious about his zelf. Fear not, fear not, curiosity will not kill zis cat, for Belgarde will gladly tell his tale, for but ze small price of 2 gold. (You feel compelled to pay the price.)

“Now zen, let Belgarde paint you a picture of ze past, ze present, and of course, ze future.”
(As the tale progresses, Belgarde’s accent seems to change)

“It was years ago, Belgarde lived very good then yes? He was a noble then, a young lordling in a minor house. Twas far away in the desert kingdom of Zaltinar, not a large land, but very wealthy from the spice trade yes? It was a paradise for his kind, a place where very many of us had gathered, trying to regain the glory of our race in times past. As he said, Belgarde was a lord in this land, his family fortune made upon the trade of spices worth more than gold. His family has a talent yes, for knowing what a merchant wants, for reading minds if you will. Belgarde was brash then, young and reckless no? When he saw something he liked, he would stop at no end to have it. And here is the downfall of Belgarde.”

“One evening Belgarde spied the most beautiful of women at the social affair of the season. A striking image of what must surely have been a goddess walking amongst mortals. So naturally he must have this woman. Belgarde quickly put his silver tongue to work and after a short while convinced this beauty to slip off to a more secluded room. It was a short lived victory though, for you see, minutes after liberating this beauty from her clothes, the door burst open. In marched none other than the maharaja of Zaltinar, with his full accompaniment of guards. It turns out Belgarde has good tastes yes? For the beauty in the bed was none other than the maharaja’s wife.”

“With a wink and a smile to the lady, Belgarde glances at the guards long enough to make the stumble all over each other, and then leaped out of the window. He knows, not the most noble of escapes, but he still has his head no? Belgarde has been on the run since, he can not go back, for surely he would bring misfortunes to his family.”

“And zo he hides here, with zis traveling show. (Almost as an afterthought) Oh oui, vous fortune, you will find ze true amour and have ze many fat babies oui. Now leave Belgarde, he has ze much to do.” (You find yourself outside of the tent, not quite sure what just happened.)
