Power Descriptions

At-Will Spells

Aegis of Assault Swordmage Feature
At-WillArcane, Teleportation
Standard Action Close Burst 2
Target: One creature in burst
Effect: You mark the target. The target remains marked until you use this power against another target. If you mark other creatures using other powers, the target is still marked. A creature can be subject to only one mark at a time. A new mark supersedes a mark that was already in place. If your marked target makes an attack that doesn’t include you as a target, it takes a –2 penalty to attack rolls. If that attack hits and the marked target is within 10 squares of you, you can use an immediate reaction to teleport to a square adjacent to the target and make a melee basic attack against it. If you hit, you deal an extra 3 thunder damage. If no unoccupied space exists adjacent to the target, you can’t use this immediate reaction.

Through the fire and smoke Clarissa ran, clutching her newborn close to her chest to shield the dangers away. She kept her eyes forward on Dorwin as he weaved through the burning house. The flames licked his orange skin, though they had no effect on the firesoul genasi. Clarissa, being a stormsoul, was not as resilient as her mate, and by the time they escaped the burning building, she’d suffered a number of burns on her arms and legs. Looking down at the blanket-wrapped bundle, she heard the baby coo, and breathed a sigh of relief that he had seemed fine.

The sound of yelling broke the moment of safety as multiple brigands with swords came charging up to the genasi pair. Dorwin unsheathed his scimitar and engaged the men, cutting them down in short order, only to find more men quickly running up to fight. At the back of the larger group was a mountain of a man with reddish skin and two horns sprouting from his head. He was too big to a tiefling, and the wings upon his back proved that his diabolic blood flowed strongly in his veins. He dismounted his horse and walked into the battle, drawing his weapon, a massive mace.

Dorwin finished off the rabble and moved to engage the devil-spawned fiend. The two warriors clashed in an epic battle as Clarissa tried to stay out of the way of the fighting and keep the baby from harm. Unfortunately for the genasi pair, Dorwin found himself outmatched, and his winged opponent savagely crushed his skull beneath the heavy mace.

Horrified, Clarissa attempted to run, but she was chased down and swiftly captured by more of the brigands. The devil made his way over to the woman and yanked the baby from her arms as she cried out in despair. Then the fiend walked away, motioning his hand indifferently at the brigands to indicate that he didn’t care what happened to the woman. He only had eyes for the child in his arms, and he laughed cruelly as he beheld his prize.

Corwin fell to the ground, his scimitar falling beside him. The old human gave a big grin as he towered over him. Hurshadt had constantly been preaching to Corwin to be ready for anything, and yet he never seemed to be able to best his teacher. Crowin got to his feet and brushed the grass from his pants as he picked up his sword. He dropped back into his fighting stance to go for another round, but Hurshadt merely raised his hand and stated that they had company. Sliver, the cruelest of the captains of the Demon Fire Gang had arrived, and he was motioning to Hurshadt to end the practice so that they could speak.

Corwin took the needed break and sat back down on the ground. He began to draw arcane symbols discreetly in the dirt, and when he completed the rune, the voices of Sliver and Hurshadt were audible to him. Sliver was complaining that the gang had waited twenty years for Corwin to master the ways of the sword mage. The gang was done waiting and would be taking him out in the next couple of days when the last days of winter had passed. It was time for him to earn his keep.

Corwin quickly wiped away the rune as the conversation ended, and he watched Hurshadt make his way back over to the genasi with a disapproving look on his face. His mentor explained that the time for training was over and that even though he had learned the basics of using sword and magic together, he still had a lot to learn. Corwin thanked his mentor for the training and promised that even though he was forced to work with the Demon Fire Gang, he would let his conscience guide him. The two then said their goodbyes.

The genasi grew angry as he watched innocent people being cut down before his eyes. The gang had raided another town for slaves and gold, but the ruthlessness of Sliver knew no bounds. When the townsfolk tried to put up a resistance to the raid, men and women were cut down to set an example. As Corwin was given the order to kill an old man protecting a child, Corwin turned on Sliver, using his arcane powers to teleport across the battlefield, catching Sliver by surprise. The two fought across the breadth of the town, constantly moving into and out of position for the best advantage. Though Sliver was an accomplished swordsman, he had always relied on his brash and ruthless charisma to carry him through. Corwin meanwhile, grew up with a sword in one hand and magic in the other, and after several minutes, the genasi gained the upper hand and slew the captain.

The rest of the brigands that had come on the raid stood and stared in disbelief at the sight of their captain dead at the sword mage’s feet. Corwin looked around at their shocked faces and ordered them to leave everything and flee. He emphasized his demand by unleashing a crackling of lightning across his body, allowing his energy lines to blaze with a bright light. To a man, the brigands dropped their loot and ran.

With a sigh, Corwin left the small farming community and hit the road to put some distance in between the Demon Fire Gang and himself. He did not want the innocent people to get caught up in his betrayal. He knew that one day he would be forced to face the devil, and when that time came, he needed to be ready. So he decided to travel the world and develop his abilities based on the teaching of an old man.
